Several precautions on sugars and starches should be added although a good diet for total health should provide all the elements needed for dental health.  One must control and limit in between meals the intake of such highly refined sweets such as soft drinks, candies, cakes, cookies, pies, syrups, jam, jellies and pastries. Avoidance of hard or sticky sweets can be proper precaution to prevent gum disease.

Intake of starchy foods such as bread, potatoes, and pastas, should be controlled by each one. Natural sugars contained in fresh fruits can provide sweet flavors with less risk of contributing to the decay if teeth are brushed regularly after eating such foods.

It is when you eat sugar and other refined carbohydrates that you promote decay and which requires the need to curtail snack of sweet meals to help lessen the possibility for more caries.  You may have snack foods that are raw vegetables, such as carrots or celery, apples, cheese, peanuts, or other items that are not likely to promote refined carbohydrates in between meal into the mouth.  Help prevent gum disease by following these precautions.
